Impotence
Q: I’m suffering from a bout of impotence. It’s never happened to me before but I know that the more I worry about it, the worse it gets! What can I do?
A: Impotence related problems can be divided into physical and psychological causes with psychological causes contributing to 90% of erectile failure. Evolution has made it very clear that the chemical and hormones of stress must outweigh the effects of sex hormones. Fatigue likewise inhibits erections. Anxiety, stress, phobias all produce large amounts of catecholamines, which directly affect the nervous system thereby preventing erections.
The causes may be superficial, such as anxiety about performance, or they may be more deeply buried. Either way, a counselling session will help illustrate the need of psychotherapeutic work.
Some recommendations
- Establish or rule out any physical cause by having a full physical examination from a specialist GP.
- Assess and remove bad habits and stress creating situations wherever possible.
- Employ meditation and relaxation techniques.
- Exercise. This reduces adrenaline and enhances endorphins and encephalins, which are sexual stimulants and, stop the tiredness associated with stress.
- If this fails Neurolinguistic Programming can most often be beneficial.
- Homoeopathic remedies, taken in a 30C potency nightly for two weeks. Lycopodium if anticipating problems, Conium maculatum if erection occurs but does not last and Agnes Castus if the erection is not firm enough.
- Vitamin E and K, the botanical medicines Ginkgo Biloba, Panax Ginseng, Damiana are to be considered but may be prescription only.
- I often employ the use of hormonal testing at ICIM. Adrenal Stress testing is also helpful. Once the cause has been established a strategic approach to treatment can then begin.
