When it comes to matters of health, the Irish male is his own worst enemy. Ravaged by heart disease, stroke and the big C, he’s simply a dying breed. And Why? Complete and utter indifference to general health, that’s why!
And we are all guilty of it. While the ladies are tripping off to the local GP’s at the first sign of illness, us men put that stabbing pain or growing lump to the back of our minds until we are practically at death’s door. Plus, who could think of having anything worse than having your nether regions invasively poked and prodded to the point of humiliation? January is always so full of promise. You resolve to lose the weight gained over Christmas, tone your abs and detox your liver. However a more important resolution is to get a regular health check, something too many people neglect. Sharon Power-Cowley, manager of the Irish Centre of Integrated Medicine near Naas, believes people should have an extensive medical assessment every two years. She said “Health issues can go undetected for a long time if they’re only minor. We can pick up on something that may not have been diagnosed until it was too late to prevent.”
